7 Signs Your Gutters Need to Be Replaced

Gutters are easy to overlook until something goes wrong.
When they are working properly, your gutter system helps move rainwater away from your roof, siding, foundation and landscaping. But when gutters become damaged, worn or no longer drain correctly, that water can start causing problems around your home.
So, how do you know when your gutters need a simple repair and when it may be time to replace them?
Here are seven signs it may be time for a new gutter system.

1. Your Gutters Are Sagging or Pulling Away From the House
Gutters should sit securely along the roofline. If sections are sagging, leaning or pulling away from the home, the system may no longer be able to properly collect and direct water.
This can happen because of loose fasteners, heavy debris, standing water or damage that has developed over time.
A small section may be repairable. However, if sagging is happening in multiple areas, it may be a sign that the gutter system is no longer functioning as it should.
2. You Can See Cracks, Holes or Split Sections
Small cracks in gutters may not look like a major problem, but they can grow over time.
When water escapes through cracks, holes or separated sections, it can run down the side of your home instead of being directed safely away through the downspouts.
If damage is limited to one area, a repair may solve the problem. If cracks and splits are appearing throughout the system, gutter replacement may be the better long-term solution.
3. Water Is Overflowing During Rain
If water regularly pours over the sides of your gutters, something is not working correctly.
Sometimes the cause is simple: leaves and debris may be blocking the flow of water. But if the gutters are clean and water is still overflowing, the problem could be improper slope, damaged sections or a gutter system that is not properly handling the amount of water coming off the roof.
Repeated overflow can expose your siding, foundation and landscaping to more water than they were designed to handle.
4. You Notice Water Pooling Near Your Foundation
One of the most important jobs of a gutter system is moving water away from the foundation of your home.
After it rains, take a look around the perimeter of your house. If you notice water consistently collecting near the foundation, your gutters or downspouts may not be directing water far enough away.
Over time, poor drainage around a home can contribute to soil erosion, foundation concerns and moisture problems.
5. Your Siding Has Water Stains, Peeling Paint or Signs of Moisture
Your gutters should help protect the exterior of your home. When they leak, overflow or pull away from the roofline, water may begin running directly down the siding.
Look for warning signs such as:
Water stains
Peeling or bubbling paint
Discoloration
Rotting wood
Mildew or signs of ongoing moisture
These issues do not always mean the gutters are the only cause, but the gutter system is an important place to check.
6. You Are Constantly Paying for Gutter Repairs
An occasional repair does not necessarily mean you need an entirely new gutter system.
But if you are repeatedly fixing leaks, reconnecting sections, adjusting sagging areas or dealing with the same problems after every heavy rain, those repair costs can begin to add up.
At some point, replacing an aging or failing gutter system may make more sense than continuing to repair one problem at a time.
7. Your Gutters Are Showing Their Age
Even a well-installed gutter system will not last forever.
Weather, temperature changes, storms, debris and years of exposure can all take a toll. Older gutters may develop multiple issues at once, including leaks, loose sections, corrosion and poor drainage.
If you are not sure how old your gutters are, or you have started noticing several of the warning signs above, it may be time to have the system inspected.
Repair or Replace? How Do You Know?
Not every gutter problem requires a full replacement.
A loose fastener, clogged downspout or isolated damaged section may be relatively simple to fix. However, widespread damage, repeated leaks, sagging sections and ongoing drainage problems may indicate that replacement is the better investment.
The best way to know is to have the entire gutter system evaluated rather than focusing on just one visible problem.
